Artist’s Proof: Singapore at 60 is a landmark exhibition and a personal tribute to Singapore and her founding leaders. Over the past decade, private collector Chong Huai Seng has acquired artworks that encapsulate Singapore’s transformation, from nostalgic street scenes to bold contemporary interpretations of identity and leadership.

In celebration of Singapore’s 60th birthday, this ambitious exhibition, curated by Kwok Kian Chow, features over 90 works by more than 50 artists, offering a fresh perspective of the Singapore story through the creative expressions of local artists from different generations. Featuring 11 new commissions and one brand-new music piece, the exhibition underscores Chong’s commitment to investing  in the future of Singapore’s arts through collecting and patronage, and inspiring audiences to embrace and support local contemporary artists.

Chong’s love letter to Singapore traces its journey from a struggling young nation to a global city. Scenes of Singapore’s evolving cityscape unfold through paintings and photographs, while works inspired by Mr. Lee Kuan Yew and the founding fathers examine their legacy and impact on nation-building. The exhibition also looks inward to examine the relationship between artists, the state, and its people.

As a private arts organisation, The Culture Story offers a unique perspective of Singapore’s art history, beyond the state-museum lens. Allowing the artworks to tell their own stories, the exhibition invites visitors from all walks of life to find unique and personal resonances with the works, fostering deeper engagement and understanding of art in context. As Singapore’s art market continues to mature, the exhibition serves as a point of inflexion to encourage more to engage with and understand art in context, beyond surface appreciation, demonstrating the vibrancy of Singapore’s art scene, young talents, and promoting the collection of Singapore art.
