CONSTELLATION by Futura
Presented by The Culture Story and curated by Jahan Loh
30 May – 09 June 2019
Futura, dubbed the godfather of contemporary street art, made his Southeast Asian debut in Singapore on 30 May 2019. Presented by The Culture Story and curated by Singapore’s leading pop artist Jahan Loh, CONSTELLATION marked the street culture legend’s first-ever solo exhibition in the region.
Futura emerged from the birth of the graffiti art movement in the early 1970s, first ‘bombing’ trains in his Brooklyn hometown. Alongside contemporaries like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, he transitioned from the streets to the gallery, bringing his distinctive abstract graffiti style to an international audience. Over the past 40 years, he pushed the boundaries of street art and painting, earning global recognition for an evolving visual language that extended beyond traditional graffiti.
The exhibition showcased 30 specially commissioned pieces created during a two-week residency at The Culture Story. CONSTELLATION offered a glimpse into Futura’s inner universe, celebrating his pioneering techniques, including his signature inverted spray. Working with a diverse range of materials and precise techniques, this series underscored how his style transcended cultural and physical boundaries—where expression met restraint, spontaneity balanced control, and splatters created poetic contradictions. His bold, vibrant compositions featured the iconic motifs that defined his practice—characters, atoms, and cranes.
A limited-edition catalogue, housed in custom-designed ammo boxes, was available for purchase during the exhibition. To complement the show, The Culture Story hosted a special event on 1 June 2019, featuring the premiere of “Futura: 60 Minutes with the Street Art Legend”, a new mini-documentary on his career, followed by a dialogue session and after-party at The Projector and Intermission Bar.
